A full or part sun location is needed for boxwood. Successfully growing these shrubs requires well-drained soil.

If temperatures become extremely hot in summer, boxwood plants will appreciate afternoon shade and regular watering. Until established, after about two years, water weekly.

Properly mulching boxwoods can improve their longevity. Their roots tend to be shallow and this helps to retain moisture in the soil and keep the roots cool. As with all shrub mulching, trunks should not be covered.
