Sustainability
As a grower, we believe it is incumbent upon us to leave the land we use and the greater world a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable place. To that end, we aim to be leaders in natural resource stewardship in solar, water, green waste, and shipping materials.
Solar covers approximately 70% of our farms electric needs. The growing operations are powered by 1,800 solar panels that generate nearly 1,000 megawatts per year. We audit our electrical usage annually, implementing new processes and procedures to reduce our demand.
Water is the life of all living things. Our water retention and recycling practices have substantially reduced our fresh water consumption. Additionally it has eliminated farm runoff outside of winter months. During the growing season, we recycle approximately 500,000 gallons of water per day. We prioritize surface water use over groundwater to ensure the healthy aquifer beneath our farm is available during times of drought.
Alder and Oak™ utilizes our green waste by turning all of our clippings, pallets, and wood waste into compost. The finished compost is blended into our soil mix ensuring no green waste is sent to a landfill. We minimize the use of Peat Moss and prioritize compost, recycled wood shavings, and sawdust for the majority of our soil mixes.
The shipping containers Alder and Oak™ uses are made from recycled materials. We are continuously evaluating our shipping materials to make them more environmentally friendly.
